Summer Frugal Work Outs

Summer is here, and it’s time to hit the beach! My Frugal exercise schedule changes throughout the year, with summer being one of my favorites. Due to the increase in temperature, I have to move away from some of the low-lying mountains and inland areas and go closer to the ocean. This means my exercise regime take on more of a water format, and what I particularly like to do is:

1. Go Swimming
We have an HOA maintained pool where we live, and it’s empty in the mornings, even during the weekends. One of my favorite things is to go and take a dip and get some laps in before anyone else has thought of hitting the pool. It certainly puts me in a great frame of mind before the working day, and puts a big smile on my face during the weekends, with sunshine, palm trees and a nice pool and hot tub to relax in, or get a work out done, depending on my frame of mind. Also, the ocean is an 8 min drive from our house, so we often head down to the beach, and now we can go for a dip in the ocean too. A weekend trip to the mountains also provides a great reason to take a dip, where we recently found in the Sierra National Forrest a fantastic river to go swimming in. Yes it was a little cold, but it was also very welcome relief from the heat, and tremendous fun to splash around in.

2. Go surfing
My surfing regime has taken quite a big hit, due to the arrival on Frugal Baby. However, we are now finding our routine, and I’m hoping to get some morning surf sessions in. The ocean has warmed up too, so no need for wetsuits when it’s a sunny day. The one thing that has changed is that one of us has to look after the baby, so Misses Frugal Prof and I are going to take alternate surf days, while the other talks Frugal Baby for a (lovely) walk along the beach.

3. Hiking has to be done early or at high altitude.
In the winters we like to go to the deserts, which are not that far away from us, and are dramatically beautiful (especially from a guy that grew up in rainy England). However, now that summer has arrived we’d rather not boil, and so we keep more to the coast. The coastal mountain range is equally beautiful, but can also get quite warm at times, so it’s a good idea to check the weather, just in case it’s going to get hot. Actually, neither Misses Frugal Prof nor I mind the heat too much, but we are much more cautious now that Frugal Baby comes with us. We also particularly love to hike the local nature preserve that is right next to our house. This preserve is a huge bonus to us being so close, but now we just have make sure we get out of the house nice an early, before everything heats up a lot.

What do you do for your summer frugal exercise regime?
