The Library, An Oasis of Frugality
April 2, 2014
In reading this blog I hope to help you graduate with honors in the life skill of Frugality, in spite of the huge temptation to work paycheck to paycheck. Aiding us in the lands of consumer culture are major outposts of frugality that can be found in virtually every town, which are in the guise of the public library.
Why do libraries promote frugality? Well, many people I know will easily buy several books a month, at $5-10 a shot, and so this can easily add up to $300 or so a year. Why not instead go to a place nearby, which for your personal benefit employs a full time paid staff that houses nearly all the books you want to read essentially for free, constantly buying new ones to fulfill your future desires. Moreover, these books are housed in what is often in a particularly nice, quite building that also typically offers free computer access/free Wi-Fi.
There are so many benefits to the library, for a start they help you be greener by not printing and shipping books to you as an individual and through sharing them, save many trees and lower carbon dioxide emissions. Advantageously, there are so many types of books to choose from, which you don’t have to store in your house, and if the book of your choice is not at your local branch, you can easily request if from another. This includes a kids section to help keep the little ones entertained, at least for a little while! This is in addition to CDs and DVDs, and some libraries even include computer courses. Best of all, a trip to the library will help keep you away from the bastions of consumer culture, the TV and the shopping mall.
